Charles Murrell "Murrell" Hughey enlisted in WWI on 15 Aug 1917 in Coffeyville, Montgomery, Kansas.
Charles Murrell "Murrell" Hughey fought with the 139th Infantry (first class), 35th Division, Company A in World War I. He was a point man, which meant that he was the first and most exposed position in a combat military formation. He had better that 20/20 vision and knew how to read the stars. His commanders would tell him where they thought the enemy was and Charles Murrell "Murrell" Hughey would go out at night using his skills to locate the enemy. He would return to his unit before dawn and inform his commanders where he found the enemy. This would then help the commanders decide where they needed to go.
Charles Murrell "Murrell" Hughey was a decorated sharp shooter during World War I.
Charles Murrell "Murrell" Hughey fought at the Meuse - Argonne offensive battle during World War I. This battle was a major part of the final Allied offensive of World War I that stretched along the entire Western Front. It was fought from September 26, 1918, until the Armistice of November 11, 1918, a total of 47 days. The Meuse - Argonne offensive was the largest in United States military history, involving 1.2 million American soldiers.
While on leave during the war Charles Murrell "Murrell" Hughey bought his first alcohol. He purchased a bottle of wine, drank the entire bottle, and got very sick. He never drank again his whole life.
Lee Julene "Julene" Wilkins Hughey and Charles Murrell "Murrell" Hughey raised Julene's niece, Kathrine Elizabeth Wilkins, from the age of two.
Charles Murrell "Murrell" Hughey was a founding member of the Bartlesville Tuxedo Lions Club. He helped build the building and playground.
Charles Murrell Hughey 5 Taken before he went into the army. He signed up in Coffeyville, KS. He wasn't yet 18, so his mother had to sign her permission.

This picture site was on Caney River, Bartlesville; notice the steps up to the old bath house. This area is now Johnstone Park.

Charles Murrell Hughey C M is standing at the front door ready to go back to work. It is noon, early 1950's and the family has gathered for lunch. Seated is Afton Norvell Wilkins and Amos Calvin Wilkins in the foreground. The big rockers that the men are seated in came from the Keystone. Julene refinished, painted and recovered the fabric. The porch was a very inviting place in the hot summer.

Charles Murrell Hughey and Lee Julene Wilkins Hughey On the beach in Florida; among other jobs, Charles Murrell Hughey worked at the Hav-A-Tampa Cigar Factory. That's probably where he picked up cigar smoking. However, after his first daughter was born, he quit.
