Gloria Julene Hughey was born with perfect pitch. She started playing around on the piano at 16 months. She started taking formal piano lessons at the age of 3. She had the ability to hear a song and would then be able to play it by ear. Because of carpal syndrome and arthritis she had to stop playing the organ in July 2006 and the piano in 2015. She then took up painting and became quite accomplished with this talent as well.
Gloria Julene Hughey started her college education at Oklahoma A & M, getting her degree in commercial art. She met and married Bruce Eugene Shirey, started her family and stopped going college. She returned to school in 1977 and lacked 6 hours in graduating with her degree in history. She finally received her degree in 1982 from Oklahoma State University with a BA in organ performance.
