On 22 Aug 1863 John A. Ford mustered out at Fayetteville, Washington, Arkansas. Then, he enlisted in Company F, Arkansas 1st Infantry Regiment on 10 Sep 1863. On 26 Feb, 1864 he mustered into Company F, 1st Arkansas Infantry, U.S. at Jenny Lind, Sebastian, Arkansas.
From John A. Ford's Civil War records: During Sept-Oct 1863 he is listed present and is promoted to Corporal, but in Feb 1864 he is listed as a Private again. He is listed present for Nov and Dec 1864, but on 10 Jan 1865 John Ford "deserted with rifle and gear" and is on the Desertion List and described as "Probably to be found Bush whacking".
On 10 Aug 1865 John A. Ford appears on Muster Out Roll - Listed as Deserting "Jany 11, 1865". One roster roll listed him as company cook. When he deserted the Army docked him $16.55 for one "Dresden Rifle Musket and accouterments", $2 for one knapsack, $.65 for one haversack and .$45 for one canteen.
From the pension file of James R. Ford (Written by the investigator on the case):
"The claimants brother, John Ford, and Captain Raymond did not get along well together. John had the reputation of being a very contrary man. The Captain brought him to time just like he did the other boys. John gave the Captain a great deal of trouble, reduced him to the ranks and John deserted and was shortly afterward killed by the bushwhackers." Apparently the desertion came sometime during what is called the "Camden Raid" which was a Union attack on Confederate positions around Camden, Ouachita, Arkansas in late 1864.
But, in a letter written 27 August 1866 by Robert and Nancy Deeds, it says to write care of James Nixon, James Ford or John A. Ford in Fair Grove, Greene, Missouri.
It was reported that John Ford was shot by bushwhackers on his front porch somewhere in Greene County, Missouri. They lived in Missouri at the time, and after his death, Sophina Catherine Jetton Ford returned to Kentucky.
