In 1832 about four miles south of the village of Payson, near Pigeon Creek, Adams, Illinois John B. Johnson was stabbed to death. John B. Johnson was the father in law of Robert E. Peterie. Daniel Lile swore to a judge that John Peterie and his brothers, Hiram C. Peterie and Andrew Peterie were the killers. The court determined that John Peterie was the murderer and dropped charges against his brothers. With his brother-in-law accused of murder by his father, Henry Lile chose to sign as surety for brother-in-law, John Peterie's bond. John Peterie was later convicted of manslaughter in the death of John B. Johnson, and was sentenced to 10 years in prison. It should be noted that there were several friends and family that had been drinking when the incident occurred.
John Peterie migrated to Van Buren County Iowa some time after serving prison time for the manslaughter charge in the death of John B. Johnson. He was in Van Buren County Iowa starting about 1845, and he remained there until his death in 1865.
