    Notes
    • Family history states that Amanda Minerva Evangeline "Nerva" Ford Israel was affectionately called Nervie, she was a tiny woman with beautiful auburn hair, and she was covered with freckles. Her eyes seemed to the color of her hair. She wasn't well and that was the one reason her grand daughter was allowed to stay with them so much those first years of her life. Nervie had "brights disease" and at time the skin of her legs would split and the fluid would spill out. Grace remembers how she and Little Lilly would wrap the legs and care for her. Nervie said Grace could be her legs. In the summer at harvest time, the men with the combines came to cut the fields of golden wheat. Long tables were set up under the the shade of a tree. Grace ran back and forth, setting the table for her grandma. She had a box on which to stand, and would stir the food cooking on the stove. She thought it was great to be grandma's little helper, helping to feed the harvesters.
Sam and Nervie had a large airedale dog which Grace could ride like a pony. Nervie made extra biscuits so Grace could toss them to the dog. He would catch them, eating the food they shared.
Grace and her mother, Little Lilly, were with her grandmother at her death. After a time, and after dark, they started home. As they drove, a little feathery cloud appeared in from of them, staying just ahead on the road. Little Lilly said, "Oh, look, Mama doesn't want to leave us." After they left a particular area of the route home, the cloud disappeared.
