Henry H. Gordon built the Gordon/Milton Hotel in the early 1840's. He and his wife Felicia W. Taylor Gordon ran the hotel. After the death of Henry and Felicia, the hotel was run by their son and daughter in law, Felix Randolph Gordon (Uncle Felix) and Bettie Allen Gordon (Aunt Bett).
Early on, the hotel was a stop on the stage coach lane from Richmond to Raleigh, North Carolina. It was famous for its cuisine, its hams and fried chicken, biscuits and silabubs, which were creamy English desserts.
During the Civil War General Lee once came to Milton and was housed and fed at the hotel. Right behind him were the Federals who threatened to burn down the hotel as a reprisal. But the Federals spared the hotel after being well fed by the Gordon family.
The Gordon/Milton Hotel was destroyed by fire on 5 May 1951. It was thought to be the work of the Dan River workers who were on strike at the time.
