Notes
Colonel Nehemiah Herbert Blackistone lived on Blackistone Island (today it is called St. Clement's Island, the name it was called in 1634) During the Rev. War he was a private, St. Mary's County Militia, 1777. He took the Oath of Allegiance in 1778. He was elected to a General Committee in St. Mary's County in accordance with the resolves of the Continental Congress in 1775. He served on the Committee of Safety in 1774. He was captured by the British and his home was burned on 16 Jun 1781 because of his rebellious sympathies. When he returned home he put in a claim for 281 lbs. as the value of property lost to him by the British.
It is family history that John Colton came to live in the neighborhood and liked to play cards. Col. Nehemiah Herbert Blackistone sat in front of a large mantel mirror and John kept reading his cards. Col. Nehemiah Herbert Blackistone lost all personal property, horses, land and house. All hands had to scatter and live where they could find a roof. The affair was considered a great tragic event.
Julia Adelaide Blackistone Custer whose father was Henry Herbert Blackistone lived at Longworth Point when the house was lost at cards. She was told stories from her father of the terrible times. But in the end all was well-the Blackistone's and Colton's intermarried.
River Springs As told by Linda Reno: On May 6, 1669, Elizabeth Gerard, daughter of Thomas, married Nehemiah Blackistone. As a wedding gift, Thomas Gerard gave the couple "Longworth's Point", 300 ac. and "Dare's Neck", 100 ac. (today’s Coltons Point and adjacent lands). The part of the property now known as “River Springs” contains 88 acres and is owned by Gordon and Gerard Blackistone Hughes, direct descendants of Nehemiah Blackistone and Elizabeth Gerard. There is the main residence, two cottages and a working farm.
"Longworth's Point" descended down through Col. Nehemiah Herbert Blackistone and Mary Cheseldine's descendants.
The original [current] house was built by George Blackistone in 1841 and contained large wings on either side. During the mid to late 1800s, his son, Dr. Richard Pinkney Blackistone, used the wings of rooms as lodging for patients.
Then in the early 1900s, Robert Deminieu Blackistone Sr. converted the structure to a resort hotel with a riverside gazebo for dancing in the evenings. During the 1930s his children, Jane (Blackistone) Hughes and Robert Deminieu Blackistone, Jr., removed the wings and gazebo, and added a kitchen, three bathrooms, and a portico front porch, creating today’s “River Springs”, a private residence.
